A campaign was launched by Echo reader Ken Wainwright in February to persuade London 2012 bosses to allow Paralympian Caroline Maclean to carry the Olympic torch through her home town.

She had been given the Norwich to Ipswich leg on which to carry the flame.

Haverhill MP Matt Hancock joined Haverhill Town Council in calling on NHS Suffolk to ensure the £1.2m a year it would save from the planned closure of the Crown Health Centre be ploughed back into medical facilities for the town.

In early February Samuel Ward Academy revealed plans to open a special free school within its grounds.
