The first new homes in a South Cambridgeshire’s biggest programme of building council homes in more than 60 years have been approved.

Now four one-bedroom semi-detached homes are due to be built in Linton after getting the go ahead from South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) last Wednesday (January 9).

The homes will replace an existing block of ten under-used garages in Chalklands owned by SCDC, with work on site due to commence later this year and be completed in 2014.

A local consultation had given residents the chance to have their say on the scheme.

Based on feedback received, extra work will now be carried out on a nearby footpath to ensure it is safer to use.

Up to a thousand new council-homes and affordable properties are planned in the district over the next three decades after a change in government housing funding policy.

Cllr Mark Howell, SCDC cabinet member for housing, said: “I’m delighted that approval has been granted to build these much-needed homes, marking a great start to our plans to build hundreds of new homes in the district.

“For the first time in years we have the option to invest heavily in new council houses, and we’re committed to listening to local people and parish councils to put them where they’re most needed.”

Cllr Roger Hickford, who is both on SCDC and is Linton Parish Council chairman, said: “There is a pressing need to provide more affordable homes in the district, and I welcome these plans with open arms,

“Redeveloping a council-owned block of garages that is under-utilised is a great suggestion and it will be fantastic to see the first new council homes built for some time come to Linton.”

The plans for South Cambridgeshire’s development over the next 20 years include 270 schemes and almost 7,000 new homes, including in Babraham, Balsham, Castle Camps, Duxford, Sawston, Whittlesford and the Abingtons as well as Linton.
