Police have been stopping vehilces driving in and around villages late at night in a big to combat burglaries.

The St Edmundsbury Rural South Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) has been carrying out the checks as part of Operation Duplex.

Four such checks have been carried out, with two in Thurlow and two in Clare.

Police have stopped 120 vehicles as part of the operation, and then search them to see what is being carried.

Sgt Gary Miller from the Haverhill SNT said the recent burglaries have mostly been happening in the early hours of the morning, all after 11pm.

“This is a pro active targeting of burglary offences,” he said.

The three priorities for the rural south SNT are:

– Reducing the number of burglaries in villages throughout the area

– Illegal parking in Kedington, particularly around Westward Deals and Kings Hill

– Speeding vehicles along the B1061 corridor and also in Kedington
