Police stop hundreds of Suffolk motorists in day of action
Two hundred and fifty vehicles were stopped in a multi-agency day on Wednesday (February 27) held to target criminals using the county’s roads.
The operation, led by Suffolk Constabulary’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) teams, focussed on roads bordering the west of the county and aimed to disrupt criminals using the roads to commit serious acquisitive crimes such as burglary.
Officers were joined by colleagues from police forces across the eastern region and by partners HM Revenue & Customs and the UK Borders Agency.
Vehicles were stopped by officers in response to suspected crimes in action, through intelligence identified via the ANPR system or after being identified as a vehicle of interest.
Thirty-two fixed penalty notices were issued, two vehicles were seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act for having no insurance, two drivers were reported for summons for driving vehicles found to be in a dangerous condition, 16 people were searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act and a vehicle was seized after being found to contain red diesel, with the owner receiving a fine of £520.
Two men were arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class B drug. A 25-year-old man from Lakenheath faced no further police action and Sean Hedley, aged 23 and from Queens Road, Brandon was later charged with the offence. He will appear at West Suffolk Magistrates Court on Thursday, March 14.
Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Morgan said, “We are extremely pleased with the success of today’s operation, which has sent a clear message to anyone thinking of using our roads in their attempts to commit crime.
”We will target offenders through any means possible, including through their method of transportation, and our officers based across the county will take action against anyone they suspect of committing offences on the road or using vehicles to facilitate crime.
“Crime levels in Suffolk continue to fall, and we are committed to doing all we can to continue this trend.
“We will continue to carry out pro-active operations such as this, and we would strongly encourage anyone with information in relation to any criminal activity to report it to police immediately on 101.”
