Post office closure 'contradicts White Paper'
CLOSING Chalkstone Post Office, in Haverhill, would contradict a recent Government White Paper, according to St Edmundsbury Council.
The council has been gathering information on the post offices mooted for closure in its area, and will prepare a response.
With between 400 and 499 customers using the site per week, closing it would conflict with the Government’s emphasis on ‘local services provided at a neighbourhood level’.
And Chalkstone’s ‘deprivation’ is also a reason the post office should stay open: “The latest indices of deprivation show that Chalkstone is one of the more deprived areas in Haverhill and in St Edmundsbury as a whole.
“It is therefore important that local residents have access to key services, and the post office is certainly recognised as being a key service.”
