A former Haverhill GP and his wife have expressed their ‘enormous’ gratitude for all the help they have been given in their quest to open a baby care unit in Ethiopia.

For four months Dr Andrew Cornish and his wife Lindsey have been part of a Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) project to open a neo natal intensive care unit at a hospital in Arba Minch.

They headed for Africa in October, the month after Dr Cornish retired from his role as managing partner at the Christmas Maltings and Clements surgery in Haverhill. He had spent three decades as a GP.

In a letter to the Echo (see page 32) Mrs Cornish said: “I would on behalf of Dr Cornish and myself like to thank everybody that has supported us with our fund-raising last summer and the more recent baby blanket appeal.”

Last summer the couple organised fund-raising events and set up a site to donate money - www.justgiving.com/Lindsey-Cornish - and have currently smashed their £5,000 target, having raised £13,266.

After Mrs Cornish mentioned on Facebook that baby blankets were needed for the unit, word spread and with particular help from Haverhill business owners David Doughty, of The Gallery, and Sue Vallis, from The Craft Basket, about 50 blankets have been knitted.

Mrs Cornish, who returns to Arba Minch next Thursday (Feb 28) after a five week spell back home in Great Wratting, said the project has been demanding, but one they are both enjoying.

She added: “He is not missing life as a GP, but he’s not had much time to think about it. If we can make a difference in any way at all it’s a real plus.”

The couple will probably remain in Arba Minch until December, added Mrs Cornish, but for the time being they would welcome any help in getting the latest batch of blankets to Ethiopia.

Anyone who can help should call Mrs Cornish on 01440 783485.
