Haverhill garage boss Kirk Pearson is gearing up for an endurance cycle ride he has been dreaming about for seven years.

Kirk, 49, who runs K P Autos in Piperell Way, is taking part in the London to Paris Cycle with his friend Les Heather who lives in Withersfield. The pair are raising £1,500 for Mcmillan Cancer Support.

Covering a distance of 300 miles over four days from July 24, they arrive in the French capital just in time for the final stage of the 2014 Tour de France – and Kirk says he’s expecting it to be a mad time.

“I think it’s going to be complete chaos and madness,” he said. “We are actually doing this with a group of 120 cyclists, and we arrive in Paris in time for the Tour de France finish. With all the people there supporting the Tour de France, it should be quite an experience.”

He heard about the challenge from a friend. “Someone I knew did it and inspired me to have a go myself, but life is busy, I run my own business, so it’s taken me six or seven years.”

Kirk, from School Road, Kedington, has run his business for more than 20 years. He took it over from his father Roger Pearson in whose memory he is raising money for the cancer care. His dad died when Kirk was only 19.

He said: “Me and Les have lost people to cancer and know what fantastic work Mcmillian do,, including looking aftre my dad.

“We know how people are always asking for money, but any donations will be greatly appreciated, I know that, for me, it’s going to be one of the hardest things I’ve attempted so it’s a real personal challenge.”

The men are training hard, and cycle all over Suffolk and Cambridgeshire three times a week and at weekends. Kirk describes cycling on British roads as deadly. “They are more cycling-friendly in France,” he said.
