Sir Jim Paice MP has called on the Government to push for tough economic sanctions against Moscow following the occupation of Crimea by Russian-backed forces.

The South East Cambridgeshire MP’s intervention came during today’s (Tuesday, March 4) Statement on Ukraine by the Foreign Secretary in the House of Commons.

The UK has suspended preparations for the upcoming G8 summit in Russia, while the US has hinted at stronger measures, including possible sanctions and asset freezes on Russian business.

Sir Jim spoke of the need to learn the lessons of the last couple of decades, including Russia’s ongoing occupation of areas of Georgia.

The former agriculture minister said: “I urge my Right Honourable friend, particularly at Thursday’s European Council meeting, to push for the toughest possible economic sanctions.

“It is the only lesson Russia will learn, otherwise we will see this happen over and over again.

“It is not surprising that the former Soviet Union countries are worried.”

In response, the Foreign Secretary said that it is important for Moscow to know there are costs and consequences, and that recent events will have a negative impact on Russia’s relationship with the rest of Europe.
