A campaign to improve safety along a notorious road has been revived by a coalition of more than 15 villages.

A campaign to improve safety along a notorious road has been revived by a coalition of more than 15 villages.

Three people have died on the A1307 in the last three years.

The A1307 Steering Group met for the first time on November 27, chaired by Linton Parish Council chairman and South Cambridgeshire District Councillor Roger Hickford.

The parish councils of Linton, Ashdon, Balsham, both Abingtons, Hadstock, Hildersham, Horseheath, Shudy Camps, West Wratting, Withersfield, Bartlow and Sawston were all present.

Babraham will be involved and Castle Camps may be.

Concerns were raised with the aim of streamlining them to present to Cambridgeshire County Council, while county, borough and district councils, and also MPs and MEPs have all been invited to the next meeting on January 24.

Jim Paice MP will attend, as will Vicky Ford MEP, while Matthew Hancock MP is also keen to attend.

Ideas included upgrading the road classification from distributor to primary, giving it more council focus, and hatching dual carriageways in part or whole to make single lanes.

Reducing the speed limit to 50 from Fourwentways to Haverhill was discussed, along with better maintenance of white lines and crash barriers to protect the Linton Village College playing fields.

“I thought if we did it more locally to get the views together for the big meeting then we can discuss those points with the appropriate councils,” said Cllr Hickford.

“The longer term strategy, which really has been kicked into the long grass recently, will also be discussed.

“What can’t happen is that we go on as we are.

“It would be good at the next meeting to discuss these short term issues but also start the ball rolling on the long term ones.

“These won’t be solved quickly and it may take 20 or 25 years, and some of us won’t be around to see it to completion, but we need to get it started.”
