People across Suffolk are being urged to step away from their TVs, computers and smart phones and ‘get up and get moving’ as part of the latest campaign from Live Well Suffolk, which is designed to encourage people to become more active.
The healthy lifestyles service is encouraging people to get moving after it was revealed that almost 80% of adults across the UK do not take enough exercise*. Current government guidelines suggest that adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, whilst children should aim for a minimum of 60 minutes per day.
To help them on their way, Live Well Suffolk has published a free ‘Get Moving’ diary which will allow both adults and children to record their physical activity and track their progress over six weeks. The service will also be touring the county and speaking to local people to help them understand how they can make small changes to improve their daily activity levels.
Steven Lee-Foster, Director at Live Well Suffolk said: “Our busy lifestyles mean it is often difficult to find the time to do some exercise. Spending too much time in front of a computer or a TV screen could have a significant impact on our health. We want to encourage people to get up and get moving, whether it is by going for a short walk, doing some heavy gardening or even dancing around the living room to your favourite song!”
He continued: “Our new physical activity diary is a great way for local people to track how much exercise they are doing, and see how they can make small changes to reach the recommended targets. Taking the time to increase activity levels can have significant benefits for your overall health and fitness.”
To help adults and youngsters get up and get moving, Live Well Suffolk recommends the following tips:
- Set a time for physical activity and stick to it. You’re more likely to find time to be active if you do it at the same time and on the same days each week.
- Ensure you stay hydrated when undertaking physical activity by drinking plenty of water.
- Sign up for a sports or fitness classes – not only will they keep you motivated but they can be fun, relieve stress and help you meet friends.
To support the ‘Get up and Get Moving’ campaign, Live Well Suffolk has added additional information to their website. Visitors can download the free physical activity diary and benefit from tips and advice on how to reach the recommended activity levels as well as view a number of motivational videos to keep them on track.
