The Savile effect sees more sex crimes reported in Haverhill

Reports of sexual offences in Haverhill have risen in the past ten months, an increase attributed largely to the Jimmy Savile scandal.

Since April 1, 2012 the town’s police have received 28 complaints, compared to a three-year average of 21.

Inspector Peter Ferrie, from Haverhill Police, said the rise is largely due to historical sexual offences being reported, with about half of the 28 reported cases, he added, dating back a number of years.

More victims of historical sex crimes are now coming forward and lodging complaints with the police since the Savile case became public as they see a greater likelihood of the crimes being investigated and solved.
