Trend unveils the Great Metropolis

Trend GB has launched its latest Metropolis collection of hand-crafted Italian glass mosaic designs, in a rich assortment of colours and textures that coordinate or contrast beautifully with any decorative environment.

This versatile new collection joins the successful Liberty ‘designer’ mosaic among the flagship ranges of the Trend tile catalogue, bringing the same alternation of smooth and undulating pieces and light refractive characteristics.

Available currently in eight different stylish colourways, including metallic, slate and naturalistic tones, Metropolis is made using up to 75 per cent post-consumer recycled glass, in line with Trend’s policy of reducing its environmental footprint.

Like the Liberty Collection, the new Metropolis mosaic is composed of hand-cut tesserae in a distinctive interlocking and irregular pattern and is based on Trend’s through-body coloured glass, Karma.

Reminiscent of stained glass, Karma is created by hand in either deep, solid colours or as a natural veined look.

On the back of the material is a reflective epoxy coating that gives a luminescent, metallic effect; although there is now the Karma Mirage option, with white or yellow gold leaf applied to the reverse.

Inspired by the undulating tracks of the metro, Trend Metropolis features distinct glass mosaic rectangles in various widths and depths, resulting in a textured composition that plays with light and produces a highly original aesthetic finish, both classic and contemporary.

It can be installed as a horizontal pattern, or vertically to create an unusual perpendicular geometry.

The deep fold lines within the body of the glass add to the visual complexity and are introduced when Karma is formed by hand into large sheets, then exaggerated during the tempering process.

There are eight colourways in the Metropolis collection: Honey, Amber, Pearl, Diamond, Bronzite, Noir, Onyx and Buxy, the latter taking its name from a village in Burgundy renowned for the beauty of its local stone.

Each pattern is a combination of differently coloured Karma glass tiles, formed by hand by expert glass cutters, with occasional higher levels of luminosity created by the Mirage 24 carat gold finish.

Thanks to the depth of glass, integral folds and irregular tiles, each design has a decorative charm of its own.

Metropolis is supplied in modules measuring around 31cm x 29cm in size and 4mm thick, either pre-mounted onto the Trend+ reactive polyurethane backing system or with a clear plastic film on the face, for ease of tile laying. It can also be cut into three 10cm horizontal sections to create an interlocking border. The material is frost, chemical, fade and thermal shock resistant, non-combustible and 0.20% porous to water, although it is not recommended for swimming pools.

A fine example of Italian craftsmanship, Trend Metropolis is priced from £275 per square metre and offers pride in ownership like virtually no other glass mosaic.
