West Suffolk group ready to listen
A clinically-led group in west Suffolk claims it is listening and responding to issues raised by patients and the public at their inaugural “patient revolution” stakeholder event last year – and is asking more people to join them and tell them more.
The NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group (WSCCG) has published a report of the action taken since July; highlighting more than 60 healthcare topics which were discussed by over 200 local people at the event in Bury St Edmunds.
Jo Finn, the lay member leading patient and public engagement for the CCG said: “So often events consult stakeholders about people’s concerns but neglect to give feedback or address any issues raised to the people who really matter – the patients. That’s why we’ve carefully looked at all topics raised by the people at our event. This is one of the ways we can improve health care in west Suffolk - and we will also be honest about where we cannot make such changes.
“This event highlighted how important it is for us to listen to local people and what an impact they can have. We want as many people as possible to get involved in making the decisions about how healthcare services in the area are shaped.
Actions carried out since the event includes:
recruiting members to the newly formed Community Engagement Group - a group of 18 local people, including a representative of Healthwatch and the Suffolk Congress, who will work with WSCCG to influence the planning and decision-making process
commiting to work with local NHS partners, voluntary organisations and community organisations
empowering patients through the West Suffolk Health Forum – a platform of communication and involvement for patients
working with the local community to support dementia patients
making falls prevention a priority through partnership working with Age UK and Suffolk County Council
giving young people a voice through establishing a Children and Young People’s ambassador in conjunction with Healthwatch, Suffolk County Council and the other Suffolk CCGs.
