West Suffolk Hospital looking for chaplaincy volunteers

The chaplaincy team at West Suffolk Hospital is appealing to people with a few hours

to spare to think about offering spiritual support to patients by becoming a volunteer.

The role is suitable for people of all ages and from all cultures and backgrounds.

It gives volunteers the chance to work alongside the chaplaincy team to listen to, reassure and help patients, give spiritual support and show care and compassion.

Some volunteers also help with worship and, if appropriate, with bedside communions.

Ian Howells, lead chaplain at the hospital, said: “Volunteering with the chaplaincy gives people the opportunity and personal satisfaction of serving as an integral member of the healthcare team at West Suffolk Hospital.

“We’re looking for volunteers from all different backgrounds and ages.

“Our chaplaincy volunteers augment the quality of healthcare the hospital provides by giving quality time to patients under the direction and guidance of the chaplains.

“The role is very rewarding, and we would encourage anyone interested in finding out

more to get in touch.”

An open morning for anyone interested in becoming a chaplaincy volunteer will take

place next Wednesday (March 13) between 9.30am and 12.30pm in the hospital chapel.

“It will give those interested the chance to find out what would be expected

from them, what is required and also how they would fit into the team.

“The team is also looking for volunteer musicians to help with worship.”

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is welcome to attend the open morning.

Please ring 01284 713486 or email chaplaincy@wsh.nhs.uk to register or to arrange a meeting with a chaplain.
