Woman attacked and robbed in Cambridge

A WOMAN was attacked and robbed as she walked through Cambridge on Christmas Day, police have revealed.

The 67 year old had walked along Fitzroy Street and had reached the junction of Eden Street, near Cafe Nero, at about 1.20pm when she was approached from behind by a man.

He grabbed her around the neck and pulled her to the ground, causing her to fall unconscious momentarily, before stealing her handbag, which contained items including a mobile phone.

The robber fled leaving the victim on the floor, shocked and shaken but not badly injured. She was helped up by a man and his daughter who called police.

The attacker is described as white, 20 to 30, and 5’8” to six foot tall.

Police have also released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the robbery.

DC Sam Constable, who is investigating, said: “This was a cowardly and despicable attack on a vulnerable woman who was left extremely shaken by the ordeal.

“It is important we catch whoever is responsible as soon as possible and anyone with information should come forward. There were people in the area at the time and I would appeal for them to consider if they saw anything significant.

“I would also ask people who live in the area to check their bins as I believe the victim’s black handbag may have been discarded nearby.”

Anyone with information should contact DC Constable on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
