Tie the knot in the Athenaeum, Bury St Edmunds

Couples in Bury St Edmunds wanting to tie the knot by having a local authority civil ceremony or partnership will now be able to share their big day at the town’s Grade One listed Athenaeum.

From December 1, ceremonies, similar to those conducted in a register office, can take place in the prestigious building’s Old Billiards Room.

It’s part of an accommodation move by Suffolk County Council’s registrars service in Bury St Edmunds.

The service is to leave its current home at the council’s former Shire Hall offices and move to offices within Suffolk House on Angel Hill.

This will give the registrars ground floor accommodation for the registration of births and deaths and the administration of marriage and civil partnerships.

The office move should take place between November 7 and 9.

During this time, a small temporary office will be set up at the Suffolk Record Office and will offer a limited service.

From 12 November, the service will operate from Suffolk House on Angel Hill.

Councillor Jane Storey, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member responsible for the registrars service, said: “We have always been committed to maintaining a quality registration service in the west of the county and a location within the historic core of Bury St Edmunds is an ideal place for the service to operate from.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer a room within the Athenaeum as a venue for ceremonies.

“It’s an iconic building in the town and I know it will be perfect for couples to share their big day.”

Councillor Sara Mildmay-White, St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s cabinet member for culture and sport, said: “The Athenaeum is already licensed for celebrating weddings, and I am very pleased that we are able to offer such a unique setting for people marking these life-affirming occasions.”

Other rooms in the Athenaeum, including the Ballroom, are still available for private hire including weddings, conferences, exhibitions and dinners.

These rooms can be booked via Mary Myers at Sodexo on 01284 735957
