HAVING not been played last season, the Kedington and Horseheath cups made a welcome return to the local football calendar this month, culminating in the finals day at Clare, on Saturday.
The competitions took on a new format this season with eight teams competing. The four winners progressed to the Kedington Cup semi-finals and the four losers contested the Horseheath Cup.

In the preliminary round, two goals from Kris Farrant and one from Adrian Johnston helped Hempstead to a 3-1 win over Kedington, while Carl Prime and Jason Letton helped Haverhill Bull through into the Kedington Cup with a 2-1 win over Belchamps.

The other winners were Hundon A, who beat Steeple Bumpstead Reserves 4-2, and Wickhambrook, who got past Clare.

Hempstead went on to beat Wickhambrook in the Kedington Cup semi-final 4-0 with two goals from Steve Griffin and one each from Nathan Staples and Ian Anderson.

Haverhill Bull had a titanic struggle with Hundon A in the other semi-final, eventually winning on penalties after the game finished 4-4 at the end of extra time.

In the first of the Horseheath Cup semi-finals, Clare beat Kedington 4-3 thanks to two goals from Gary Cowley, and one each from Matt Britton and Kevin Davis.

They met Belchamps in the final, who beat Steeple Bumpstead Reserves 4-3 with goals from Dale Crisp, James Sewell, David Gray and Chris Woods.

The finals were both very close games, Hempstead beat Haverhill Bull 2-0 to lift the Kedington Cup.

A James Thurbin penalty was all that separated the two teams until Kris Farrant’s goal in the final minute clinched the game.

The Horseheath Cup was won by Clare, who beat Belchamps 2-1.

Gary Cowley netted twice but Joe Sewell grabbed a late goal to set up a tense final few minutes.

Callum and Derren Harrison hit the winning goals on Friday night as Hundon Reserves won the Hundon Coronation Cup by beating Ashdon Villa 2-0.
