AN improved goal threat could help Haverhill Rovers survive the drop from the Ridgeons League Premier Division, according to new boss Peter Betts – who has made his first five signings in the last seven days.
Striker Martin Westcott has come into form with four goals in his last three matches while Betts has moved to bring in forwards James Walker, from Newmarket, and Shaun Banham, who netted on his return to Rovers at Harwich on Saturday.
Betts has al
so secured the signings of three attacking midfielders, Louis Harper from Wivenhoe Town, Dan Marshall from Newmarket and Sam Green, who returns to Haverhill after a spell away travelling.
"They all have got good attitudes, work hard, have that extra bit of quality and more importantly we now have competition," said Betts.
He added: "Westy (Westcott) links play up really well and contributes to goals but we need some real goalscorers and Shaun Banham and James Walker fit the bill.
"Banham looked a real threat on Saturday and we haven't had that in the last few games to give us something different."
Harper and Walker are in line to make their debuts in the trip to Wroxham on Saturday, where Rovers scored a surprise 2-1 win at the end of last season.
But Betts will send his side out with a positive attitude.
He said: "They are normally strong at home and are always a good side no matter what.
"We have to go over there, be positive, and try to get a result."
Marc Abbott (knee) is three-weeks away from a return while midfielder Joe Harvey (leg), who has missed the last 15 matches, is back in training and could be in line for a return against Histon Reserves on December 17. Paul Abbott remains a long- term absentee while Lee Hurkett is still short of match fitness.
New signings Sam Green (short of match fitness) and Dan Marshall (work commit-ments) will be unavailable but Neil Cogger, Jim Hollingsworth and Neil Hammond should all return.
