SPORT in the Haverhill area was decimated by last week's cold snap, with all but one outdoors sporting fixture involving one of our teams falling to the weather on Saturday.
Even rugby and hockey matches had to be postponed – despite the latter being played on Haverhill Leisure Centre’s all-weather pitch.

Only Hempstead United’s BIS Junior Football League Division 4A match at Saffron Rangers survived the big freeze.

That was because it was played on Linton Village College’s 3G pitch.

Goals from Kris Farrant and Russell Sykes weren’t enough in the end as Hempstead were only able to fight back from 3-0 down to 3-2.

Haverhill Rovers, Haverhill Rugby Club and Haverhill Hockey Club all had important home matches postponed.

Haverhill hockey captain Tina Bunch said: “We’ve not had any games called off in Haverhill for ages.

“We’ve had away games called off depending on the opponent’s pitch.

“One thing that has affected us is the cinema being there so the sun can’t get to the pitch.”
