HAVERHILL Men's A Team got their Halstead and District Tennis League Division Two campaign off to a poor start with defeat on the carpets of The Essex B.
Adam Fowle and Lewie Hensby were the only bright spots winning all three of their sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

Captain Derek Bish and partner Mike Freed struggled to find any form at all on the alien surface but nearly snatched a point after fighting back from 5-1 down to 5-4 against S Inskip and C Barnett before losing 6-4.

That was after they had lost their other two sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Ian Terry and Stuart Read struggled as well, going down 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

Haverhill men's B Team were knocked out of the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup at the first round stage after a closely fought match with Wickhambrook.

Jake Warner and Ray Goddard were unlucky to take all four of their sets, instead having to settle for three, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5.

David Payne and Geoff Plummer had lost their three opening sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, when Payne had to retire with a thigh strain.

The B team were due to kick off their Norfolk and Suffolk Division Three campaign last night.
