NPOWER NATIONAL VILLAGE COMPETITION
Horseheath 181-9 beat Upwood 162 by 19 runs

HORSEHEATH had an away trip to Upwood for their first round of the NPower National Village Competition, it was an early start for the lads having to be there by 11am for training with the ex-England stars Alec Stewart and Dean Headley.
It was fantastic for everyone involved and all the players got shirts and caps, the kids all got shirts and cricket sets with the WAGS getting a brolly.
Horseheath were put into bat on a track that looked unreliable, and were soon in trouble at 4-2, but it was the father and son combination of Alan and Rob Ketteridge who steadied the innings with 27 and 30 respectively.
With 17 overs Ellis was allowed to play his game and push the run rate up, smashing 72 in about ten overs to push the total to 181-9 off the allocated 40 overs.
Horseheath knew early wickets were vital to keep in the competition and Ellis and R Ketteridge obliged.
Upwood moved into a winning position thanks to the N and S Tuffin, but a fantastic catch by A Ketteridge off the bowling of Giles and S Ketteridge hitting the off stump both Tuffins were back in the pavilion.
Some hard hitting by Milner looked to to have put Upwood close but he was dismissed by S Ketteridge and Towers picked up the final two Upwood wickets to finish with 4-29 and leave the hosts 19 short of the Horseheath target.

HUNTS COUNTY BATS SUFFOLK CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION TWO
Mellis 78 lost to Haverhill Sunday 79-8 by two wickets

HAVERHILL'S opening bowlers Russell Davis and Dan Poole were very effective, both in removing the dangerous Mellis openers and in keeping the score down .
By the end of their opening spell of six overs each the score was 36-3.
Steve Saville and Joe Woodley then took over and between them removed the remaining seven wickets for only 42 runs.
Saville finished with fabulous figures (6-2-12-4) as did Joe Woodley (6.5-0-27-3).
What followed in the form of Haverhill's batting was about as far removed from their bowling performance as anyone could imagine.
A combination of over confidence, complacency and some woefully inept batting contrived to make the 79 required runs look like a mountain.
Only Neil Mitchell, David Saville and Dan Poole went about the task with the required concentration to the job in hand.
The runs were eventually got after 21 overs but with the loss of eight wickets.

TUCKER GARDNER PREMIER DIVISION TWO
Abington 202-4 lost to Cambridge NCI 206-6 by four wickets.

ANOTHER solid start of 74 by Stuart Duquemin and Guy Ennew, the Abington openers (one century and two fifty partnerships in three games so far), was built upon with a 59 second wicket partnership as first skipper David Pimblett and than Harry Randall raised the tempo.
Clever off-spin bowling by Jake Allcock with three important wickets helped to keep the total down to 202.
In reply, Tom Griffiths biffed powerfully in making 46 out of another 74 opening stand to give NCI the initiative before a double change of bowling brought three quick wickets to Martin Little (two) and Dave Hamper. U
Unfortunately Dave strained a hamstring and had to retire from the field, leaving Abington with ten men after the promise of a replacement fielder failed to materialize.
As NCI slowly regained a seemingly winning position, with a steady fourth wicket stand of 52 (Jimmy Hadley and Ian Osborne) the game turn on its head once again as Stuart Duquemin started his second spell with his first ever hat-trick.
However, Mark Thompson with some powerful blows and Peter Allcock had other ideas as the loss of a bowler and fielder started to hurt Abington, NCI gradually increased the urgency during the unbroken 57, seventh wicket partnership.

CCA SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
Horseheath 182 beat Cambridge St Giles 79 by 103 runs

HORSEHEATH started their campaign with a splendid victory of the league new boys Cambridge St Giles.
Horseheath got off to a slow start with the bat but without losing wickets until Goldsmith was bowled for 20.
A Ketteridge (19) and M Ketteridge (18) moved Horseheath on before R Ketteridge came to the crease and played a very sensible innings, seeing off the better bowlers and then moving on.
Ellis hit a quick 20 and J Ketteridge (17) helped push the total past 180 with R Ketteridge finishing with 61no.
St Giles were one down when Meddle had to leave at tea with a dislocated finger and Horseheath got the breakthrough on the field in the third over as Edwards took the catch off Ellis' bowling.
R Ketteridge bowled three of the top five batsmen with brilliant swinging yorkers and he was unlucky not to get a hat-trick when an edge could not be held on to.
St Giles could never get back into the game with M Giles finishing with 3-5.

CCA JUNIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1B
Thurlow 162-8 beat Whittlesford 105 by 57 runs

AN extremely depleted Thurlow team entertained Whittlesford in their first Cambs League game of the season after being promoted to Junior 1B and came away with a comfortable win.
S Lanceman (24) and K Donno (17) got off to a solid start on a damp and soft wicket but it was M Buckner who held Thurlow's innings together with a strong 80 before he was stumped by D Baker (5-39).
B Piper (12) was the only other Thurlow batsman to reach double figures as they closed on 162-8.
L Kingston and P Hulyer were in top form with the ball for Thurlow, taking four wickets each and they stopped Whittlesford getting a foothold in the game.
Kingston got the breakthrough for Thurlow and they never looked back, bowling out Whittlesford, who top scored through A Newbury (33), for 105.

CCA JUNIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 3C
Balsham 94 lost to Mill Green 95-6 by four wickets

Mill Green made the short trip to Balsham for their first game of the season and to start their CCA campaign. The game turned out to be low scoring, with both sides employing different tactics, and it was the visitors who were to come away successful.
The new Mill Green skipper, Richard Blackmore, won the toss and decided to insert the home side on what looked to be a typical damp and slow early season wicket.
It soon became obvious, however, that the Balsham team were in the mood for attack as they moved their score to 50 after 13 overs. All of the early batsmen were looking to strike the ball despite the bounce proving to be unpredictable with the odd delivery keeping very low. As a consequence, they were losing wickets at regular intervals and after twenty overs were six men down. E Watts (12) and S Saunders (29) had scored the bulk of the runs until the latter was run out by a direct hit from Paul Turner. S Tinsley (7) and M Tozer (10) tried to keep the scoreboard moving but three wickets from Stephen Albon and two from Ed Ford kept the home side down to 94 off 30.4 overs. Mill Green's new young players Liam Basham and James Haylock (1 catch) deserve a mention for their efforts in the field in helping to keep the runs down.
The Mill Green response was the complete opposite of Balsham's. After twenty overs the run rate was going along at one run an over but, crucially, they were not losing the early wickets their hosts did and the opening bowlers were being kept at bay. Entering the final twenty overs the visitors still needed 75 runs to win but, with wickets in hand, were able to attack the second string bowlers. Andrew Argent (14), Richard Blackmore (35 no) and Paul Turner (8) struck the bad balls well and, as the end of the innings approached, saw Mill Green through to victory.
