HAVERHILL men's A team somehow snatched their first win of the season in Division Two of the Halstead and District Tennis League, at home to Thaxted.
After Robert Jeffs and Mike Freed comfortably saw off Stuart Harris and Terry Applin, Thaxted levelled the scores when John Merritt and Mark Squire beat Ian Terry and Stuart Read 6-1.

Captain Derek Bish and partner Adam Fowle gave Haverhill the ad
vantage with a 6-1 success over Sam Bushell and Keith Johnson.

Terry and Read lost 6-2 to Harris and Applin but Jeffs and Freed beat Bushell and Johnson 6-4 to restore Haverhill's lead.

But things were level again soon after.

Despite Bish and Fowle fighting back from 4-1 down against Merritt and Squire to lead 5-4, Bish missed two easy volleys to hand Thaxted their third set.

Things looked bleak when Jeffs and Freed lost to Merritt and Squire but Fowle and Bish secured at least a point when when they saw off Applin and Harris 6-3.

Terry and Read recovered some form, after losing their first five sets of the season, to steal a win for Haverhill as they beat Bushell and Johnson 6-3.

HAVERHILL Men's B Team won 5-3 at Newmarket last Wednesday to kick off their Norfolk and Suffolk League Division Three campaign in the perfect way.

David Payne and Steve Withers lost their opening two sets 6-3, 6-4 but played out of their skins to take the second two 6-4, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Jake Warner and captain Ray Goddard ground out a result winning three of their sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, but lost 6-2 in the other.
