AN EXCELLENT display from Haverhill Rovers vanquished opponents Long Melford and gained some revenge for their FA Vase exit ten days earlier against the same opponents.
Harry Halls grabbed the headlines with an assist and two goals, including a superb first-time dipping volley, but a number of players excelled in a good all-round team performance – a shame only 39 people turned out to watch it.

Rovers started bri
ghtly, Halls cross headed over from six yards by Ryan Kent before Stuart Kingham hit the bar from 20-yards, ex-Hundon keeper Liam Cutts scrambling the rebounding ball to safety.

Halls' resulting corner was flicked in at the near post by Gareth Thomas to break the deadlock and end Rovers' goal drought dating back to Craig Cutts' FA Vase winner against Ely City on September 6.

Kingham again hit the goal frame on 15 minutes after taking Mark Abbs' pass and cutting inside before seeing his shot tipped onto the post and away by Cutts.

On 23 minutes Rovers scored again as Halls punished Melford full-back James Raby's poor attempt to shield a lobbed pass to safety, by running round his back and then volleying home, first time, from the right-hand side of the box.

Melford threatened every time they had a corner, Justin Crisell twice putting headers just off target, before they squandered a great opening on 45 minutes as Adam Potter produced a poor cross when he should have shot.

Rovers created a number of decent openings in the second half as Jenkin in particular became more influential with a series of clever flicks and and some good link-up play.

The visitors' keeper Cutts produced good saves to deny both Kent and Halls but could do nothing on 81 minutes when sub Jack Jones' low cross was tapped in at the far post by Halls to make it 3-0.

ECHO MAN OF THE MATCH: Paul Jenkin.

ROVERS (4-3-2-1): Campbell; Kingham, Hollingsworth, Thomas, Newnes (Tabrar 77); Challis, Abbs(Holmes 65), Elkins; Halls, Kent(Jones 79); Jenkin.

STATS: Corners, ROV 3 MEL 4, bookings ROV 0 MEL 0, woodwork ROV 3 MEL 0. Attendance 39.
