FINAL
Helions Bumpstead 1
West Row Gunners 3
A disappointing end to the season for Helions Bumpstead pitched against West Row Gunners in the League Cup Final played at Newmarket FC.
On a bumpy, uneven surface this was never going to be sp
ectacular for a fair crowd from both sides and so it proved with few if any chances in the opening half hour.
Then a tragic error of judgement by Helions let Gunners in for a fortuitous opening goal.
This was followed ten minutes later by a Gunners second when a save by Helions No 1 Dan Wilkins was bundled over the line from the rebound.
Helions responded with a slick passing movement which was finished by Danny Hill drilling past the Gunners keeper on the 43rd minute.
Although now looking stronger following their goal, the half-time whistle sounded too soon after they had reduced the deficit with Helions 2-1 down at the break Helions never really produced in the second half with the Gunners striking a third on the 55th minute, after they had again failed to clear.
Helions manager Dave West introduced first substitute Brad Cox as they fought their way back.
Danny Hills run just needed an accurate finish and Tom Kirk was denied by the Gunners keeper and he then went wide of the target on another opportunity.
Further Helions substitutes, James Morris (75 minutes) and Miles Bullwinkle late on joined the action but West Row Gunners saw out the closing stages to deservedly secure the Cup.
So an added disappointment for the Helions team after narrowly missing out on a third consecutive league promotion and now finishing runners up in the Cup competition.
