HAVERHILL'S Simon Iron narrowly missed out on the Suffolk Open in Ipswich, defeated in a controversial final by just one point.
In his opening rounds Iron had disposed of Lawrence and Spragg.

The semi-final though proved much tougher against the experienced and far superior squash game of Muncaster.

Despite Iron taking the table tennis 21-6, Muncaster turned the table
s with 21-16 and 21-8 victories in badminton and squash.

This meant that Muncaster had to obtain 15 points in the tennis but Iron’s steely resolve saw him run out a 21-4 winner.

The final against Norfolk’s Chris Batey was a tight encounter with Iron struggling against the top spin table tennis skills of Batey which pushed him into a 21-9 lead.

Iron upped his game in the badminton and squash with 21-8, 21-11 victories, leaving him only 11 points required for victory.

However, tennis is Batey's specialist sport and in a game littered with tension and tight calls, and with fitness levels pushed after 15 matches, Iron only managed ten points bringing the game to a draw at 61-61.

The match rested on what Iron believed to be the last point and with his first serve hitting the net he was duly informed that it was a one serve decider, resulting in a 62-61 victory for the 18-year-old.
