PETER Betts has received the backing of chairman Steve Brown and former caretaker-assistant manager Derek Richardson after being appointed Haverhill Rovers' new manager this week.
Betts received the news before Saturday’s trip to Felixstowe & Walton United and was in the dugout with outgoing caretaker-assistant boss Neil Farlie to watch Rovers draw 2-2.
The new man in charge is already close to making his first signing, att
acking midfielder Louis Harper from third-placed Wivenhoe Town, and is in discussions about five or six other options.
When asked about why Betts was the man chosen, Mr Brown said: “His enthusiasm was the main thing as well as his knowledge of local football and his coaching ability and experience after his American trip.
“He’s hit the ground running and is doing an excellent job.
“Hopefully it’s going to be a long and fruitful partnership and get some stability back in the club.”
Betts has also received the backing of former caretaker-assistant manager Derek Richardson, who finished his temporary reign with Farlie at the end of the week.
Richardson said: “It’s a great opportunity for him with the new ground coming. If he can stay with the job and do a good job, it’s a chance to step into that with its new facilities.
“I hope he’s the next big thing.”
He added: “Hopefully he will be a manager that people will talk about in 25 years.”
