STRIKER Paul Shaw has become the latest first team player to leave Haverhill Rovers as coaching staff look to hold open training sessions to unearth some promising local talent to bolster their squad.
The player, who became part of Rovers' folklore by scoring their winning goal against Conference South side Eastbourne Borough in an FA Cup clash in 2006, had missed almost all of last season with a serious back injury.

Shaw has gone back to previous club Newmarket Town, due mainly to family commitments and to cut down on travel, leaving Rovers' first team coach Peter Betts disappointed, but not angry.

He said: "We made him a good offer but he's agreed to sign for Newmarket.

"When everyone cleared off at the and of the season, he stuck with us and he has been loyal throughout.

"He's been honest from day one and we've got nothing but respect for him."

Although Shaw has left, Rovers have received the fillip of Joe Harvey and Marc and Paul Abbott agreeing to stay for next season and are now on the lookout to tap into the local football scene to hopefully discover some new talent.

The club's first two pre-season training sessions on Thursday, June 26, and Tuesday, July 1, at Samuel Ward college are being opened up to any players looking to step up from the local leagues to a higher level. Each session starts at 7pm.

Betts added: "Hopefully we will have 15 to 20 new faces turning up there so we can have a look and see what they can offer.

"Obviously we are looking to run with more local players given the financial constraints this year. The only people we've approached ourselves are players from out of town who have Ridgeons League experience.

"Basically we are just looking for another three or four players, either locally or from out of town with Ridgeons League experience, just to bolster the squad."
