THE biggest match in the Cambridgeshire League this weekend was undoubtedly the local derby between Abington and Babraham at the top of Tucker Gardner Premier League Division Two.
A convincing win for third-placed Babraham, courtesy of Saju Balakrishnan (3-15) and John Woodgate (41), denied second-placed Abington the chance to go top but closed the gap between the two sides to just 12 points.

Weston Colville also closed in on Abington and moved up to fourth as a result of their four-wicket success at Saffron Walden II.

Alex Meddle and Fred Scruby both secured four-wicket hauls while Adam Curtis (45) led the way with the bat as Colville easily chased down their 132 target for victory.

Martin Heginbotham’s 49 not out helped Sawston secure a draw with Camden as they managed to hold onto all their wickets, despite falling 61 runs short of Camden’s 202-9.

Timothy Ikin earlier took 5-69 for Sawston, as they scored enough points to remain just outside the Tucker One drop zone.

The chances of Balsham or Horseheath joining Abington, Babraham, Colville and Sawston in the Tucker gardner League next year appears unlikely but Balsham won the local bragging rights from Horseheath with a 90-run win in Cheffins Senior League Division One.

Linton Village were spared being cast further adrift at the bottom of Senior Two by a free weekend for them.

There was good news for both Sawston II and Thurlow in Cricket Stick Junior League Division 1B as Sawston II won for the ninth time from nine matches by beating Elmdon by eight runs.

Thurlow had success at the other end of the table, lifting themselves out of the relegation zone with a four-wicket win at Eversden.

Abington II gained some small revenge for their first team’s local derby defeat by beating Babraham II by five wickets in Junior 2C.

Andrew MacDonald (3-21), Richard Brookman (2-16), John Webb (2-23) and Jerry Hall (2-40) made sure the wickets were spread round equally for Abington II.

Whittlesford lost at Longstowe II and Sawston III were beaten by Burrough Green in the same division. Marcus Wetzel made 50 for Sawston III.

Junior 3C’s bottom side Helions Bumpstead and second-bottom team Mill Green both remained on course for relegation after defeats at the weekend.

Helions lost at Godolphin by seven wickets after only making 82, while Mill Green lost by five wickets to Wilbrahams II.

Weston Colville maintained their 100 per cent record in Junior 4B by winning for the seventh time this season, at home to Cambourne II with Callum Mayfield scoring 77 with the bat for Colville.

James Macer (4-12) and John Spencer (36) helped Linton Village II to a win at Elmdon II in Junior 4C but remained bottom of the table.

Whittlesford II lost at Royston II by 16 runs in the same division.

Sawston IV lost to Hardwick & Caldecote in their top-of-the-table clash in Junior 5C, falling 85 runs short in their chase of Hardwick’s 227-5.

Bottom-side Linton Village III lost at Cokenach II by two wickets but there was success for Babraham III, who beat Cambourne III by four wickets.
