THREE of the Haverhill area's best young athletes competed at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead at the weekend.
Most of the championships were played out under heavy rain, but in much the same conditions as she had endured in finishing fourth in junior girls shot put last year, Sam Milner overcame the weather to take an excellent bronze medal in the inter girl
s’ discus.

Although her throw of 34.90 metres was a little down on her personal best, it was an excellent result in the conditions.

On the track Holly Archer competed in the 800 metres.

She took second place in her heat but was then drawn against all the best runners in the country in a lopsided looking semi-final draw.

Holly gave everything in her efforts to qualify and fifth place in a fast race would have been enough, the other semi being slower.

Coming off the final bend she was still well in contention just off the shoulder of the fifth-placed athlete, but she narrowly failed to get past and had to settle for sixth and elimination. Luke Allen was 11th for the senior boys in triple jump.

n Emily Barker competed for a depleted West Suffolk in the Eastern Young Athletes League match at Thurrock on Sunday. She took on a heavy running schedule of the 800, 1,500 and 3,000m, coming away with a best result of 2nd in 1,500m B string.
