HAVERHILL’S surge for a promotion place came to an abrupt end at The Essex on Monday night with a shattering defeat.

After three straight victories, Haverhill found themselves outplayed by a very strong home side.

Captain Marcia Armstrong and partner Derek Bish lost their three sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, while Ian Terry and Joan Ford also got close to gaining sets in losing their three, 7-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Nigel Fitch and Gill Argent started well but were edged out of their first set, 7-5, before losing their next two, 6-0, 6-0.

HAVERHILL suffered a total meltdown as they were white-washed for the first time since returning to the Halstead League five years ago.

The loss has left Haverhill scrapping for survival at the bottom, following promotion from Division Two last year.

Derek Bish and Nigel Fitch lost 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, last minute stand-in Robin Miller and Captain Adam Fowle lost 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, while Robert Jeffs and Ross Tobin lost 6-0, 6-2, 6-0.
