TWO Easter weekend wonder goals have given Haverhill Rovers a fantastic opportunity to avoid relegation from the Ridgeons League Premier Division.
Louis Harper’s spectacular 25-yard volley put Rovers in control of their match with second-bottom Norwich United on Saturday, before Martin Westcott’s dramatic 93rd minute winner against Histon Reserves two days later.

Westcott’s superb curling goal was all the more sensational because Histon had taken a 2-1 lead in the 89th minute, but Harry Halls levelled just seconds later and Westcott won the game with a great effort.

“I thought the whole game was unbelievable,” said Rovers boss Peter Betts. “We should have had it won in the first 20 minutes and missed a few good chances, but we were creating chances and sooner or later we were going to score goals.

“At one-all we made changes we wouldn’t normally make. Because of the situation we are in we had to take a gamble.

“I thought it had come back to bite me when Histon scored in the 89th minute but to score again so quickly was great and the finish (by Westcott) was just unbelievable.

“That was a massive six points for us and our morale.”

Speaking straight after Monday’s win, Westcott described his winning goal to Echo sports writer Derek Bish

“Stuart Kingham put a great ball over the top, it bounced up and hit my head and took me quite wide so I thought the chance had gone,” he said.

“Fortunately, the defender cut off the wrong area and I managed to come inside and get a shot in.

“As a striker, you always go far post in those areas so if the keeper saves it there are people following up, but I hit it well.”

However, Rovers’ top scorer wasn’t planning on playing after he continued to feel the effects of a dead leg he picked up against Stanway and aggravated against King’s Lynn Reserves.

“I went on the bench and fortunately didn’t need to come on,” said Westcott. “Hopefully, today I was going to do the same to rest me a bit more.

“But with ten minutes to go we had nothing to lose so Peter (Betts) put me on.”

Haverhill are now four points behind Norwich with two games in hand and nine points behind Harwich & Parkeston with four games in hand but must take their good form into next week’s encounter with fifth-placed Wroxham if they are to keep the pressure up on their rivals at the bottom.

“Wroxham are a different kettle of fish (to Norwich and Histon) but our confidence and belief is high,” said Betts, who also welcomed a new assistant manager to the club this week in ex-Newmarket Town boss Tony Marshall.

Westcott looks as if he will have to settle for a place on the bench again Saturday while Neil Hammond and Jamie Challis return to the squad after missing Monday’s match.

Skipper Marcus Hunt should be fit despite picking up a knock in the Histon match.
