HUNDON'S assistant manager believes his side can challenge for the Kershaw Premier League (KPL) title if they can show the same form they did on Saturday to beat hot favourites and current leaders Fulbourn Institute.
Mark Ward, assistant to ex-Wickhambrook manager James Jolland at Hundon, saw Craig Smith and Martyn Farrant head home second-half goals at the Ridgeons League hopefuls to secure a 2-1 win.
But he knows his side must stop dropping points against si
des further down the table and show the same passion and quality that has seen them win at Fulbourn, take Ridgeons Premier side Mildenhall Town to extra time and thrash KPL champions Waterbeach on their own patch.
“If we play like we did on Saturday, we could challenge,” said Ward. “It’s just down to consistency.
“We’ve got a lot of youngsters, four or five 19-year-olds, and it’s just a case of channelling their enthusiasm into the right causes.
“With the team we’ve got, we are certainly looking at the top five.”
An end-to-end first half could have seen a high-scoring draw at the break but Matt Morrison, in the Hundon goal, held off Fulbourn’s attack along with a very able defence that included match winner Farrant, who was named man of the match.
The deadlock was finally broken shortly after half time when midfielder Craig Smith rose to head home a brilliant free-kick from Nathan Copsey.
Man of the match Farrant then nodded in another set piece to double Hundon’s lead but the final ten minutes were nervy after the home side reduced the deficit after Hundon failed to clear a free-kick.
“It was just a real even game,” said Ward. “Four-all wouldn’t have been an unfair result because there were so many chances.”
Hundon host Newmarket Town Reserves at Hundon Recreation Ground on Saturday. Kick off is at 2pm.
