Lashings returns for fifth successive year

For the fifth year in succession, cricket lovers in Haverhill will get the chance to see some of the biggest names in the sport when the celebrated Lashings World XI comes to town.

On Thursday, August 11, Haverhill Cricket Club’s Manor Road ground will welcome the all-star squad of players, which includes the likes of Darren Gough, Gordon Greenidge, Dominic Cork, Tino Best and John Emburey.

The gates open at 11.15am, with a Kwik cricket exhibition at 11.30am involving Haverhill Cricket Academy’s Under-11s to 13s.

Corporate guests will enjoy a lunch, auction and introduction to the Lashings players at 12.30pm before the match commences at 2.15pm.

It is hoped that Henry ‘Blowers’ Blofeld, of Test Match Special fame, will return again this year to do the commentary, as he did last year.

Haverhill CC has other hopes for the match, as Greg Street, from its Lashings Organising committee explained: “I’m hoping at the moment Chris Silverwood will be able to play for us and we are also hoping to bring in another celebrity/pro player to play in the Haverhill team, in addition to the Lashings boys that are already coming, just to add an extra flavour to what’s happening on the day.”

With this year being Haverhill CC’s 150th anniversary, the match is being incorporated with a number of other events to commemorate the special date.

The corporate hospitality marquee will also be up for Haverhill’s weekend fixtures either side of the Lashings match, while the club is hoping to organise a game between a Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Australian XI and an Adam Harrison Midweek League XI.

Also being tabled is a fixture between a President’s XI, made up of ex-Haverhill players, against a side made up of current Haverhill players aged under 25, and a youth tournament, which will either involve just the Haverhill Academy or other youth teams from across the region.

Tickets for the Lashings match are expected to go on sale before the end of June from Haverhill Arts centre, priced £10 adults and £5 children.

Hospitality packages, with tables of ten at £500, can be booked by calling Greg Street on 07885 336080.
