ESSEX & SUFFOLK BORDER LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION

Haverhill Sports Association 0 Gas Recreation 5

HSA’s hopes of challenging for the title were dealt a serious blow as pacesetters Gas Recreation inflicted a record league defeat on the home side, their first of the season.

HSA started the match positively, Owen Longley escaping down the right found Luke Strutton whose effort was tipped onto the post by the visiting keeper.

Ten minutes later Strutton thought he had opened the scoring but his effort was ruled out for offside.

HSA kept threatening as they had the better of the opening 25 minutes with Strutton and Paul Hunt both seeing efforts hacked off the line.

However, Gas started to raise their game and took the lead shortly before the break when poor marking allowed a midfielder space on the edge of the box and he made no mistake to finish past Liam Savage.

The second half was a different story however as HSA produced one of their worst periods of play in memory.

Gas dominated the half and the only surprise was that it took until the 70th minute to record a second, this led to a ten minute spell where the visitors added three more.

On this showing Gas Rec would be worthy winners of the league, there work rate and desire was phenomenal.

HSA must ensure there is no repeat of this showing as they face a local derby with Hedinghams United on Saturday.
