European bronze for Haverhill swordsman

Haverhill’s Martin Clark returned from the 19th European Iaido Championships the proud holder of two medals.

Clark, the head of the KenYuKan Dojo, which meets twice a week at West Wickham Village Hall, competed in the Individual 6th Dan division.

He claimed the bronze medal in the individual event and also won a fighting spirit medal, with his opposite number Andy Watson from the Eishinkan Dojo London taking the gold, beating the Italian number one Menagatti, who had previously beaten Clark.

For the British squad overall it was a disappointing campaign although most of the members made it through the pools section of the competition they would all miss out in the knock out rounds.

The UK were having to field a less experienced team due to the loss of three members now living in Japan, but the manager insisted that it was still a good show.

In the team event Germany and Belgium prove strong again this year, taking gold and silver respectively.

The event was staged at Stevenage, the smallest on the European circuit, and hosted by the British Kendo Association, with 21 countries taking part.
