Guide heading to Iceland to 'camp like Vikings'
A GIRL Guide from Hildersham is looking forward to mountain climbing, river rafting and a glacier expedition after being selected to join a group of 12 Cambridgeshire guides on a trip to Iceland.
Joanne Maimaris, 14, will spend two weeks in the country in July, visiting Reykjavik, and active volcanoes and camping like the Vikings in Kjarni forest.
She has to raise 1,350 to go on the trip and has been organising a disco, a jumble sale and a pudding party to help raise the funds.
Joanne, who was selected to go on a trip with the guides to Switzerland last year, said: “I’m really excited but it will be a lot of work.
“The thing I am looking forward to the most I think is just the atmosphere there. I’ve never been to a place like it.”
Joanne applied to Guiding International, which accepted her and decided the best place she could go was the National Jamboree at Hamar Scout Centre in Iceland.
She will also have the opportunity to take part in creative activities such as making shoes out of fish skin, carving bones and spinning wool.
