Haverhill Karate Club awards youngest ever student her grading

Jess Beardmore has created a new record by becoming the youngest ever member of a karate club to pass her grading.

The four-year-old has become a red belt 9th Kyu with the Haverhill Wado Freestyle Karate Club.

Joining her in the achievement were fellow students - all new to the club in the past few months - Scarlet Crick and Viktor Ivanov, both six, and seven-year-old Beth Beardmore.

All of the group have been coached by the club’s newest instructor, Georgina McGivern, who is just 16 herself.

Instructor Greg Malyon said: “We have never graded anyone that young before because we have never taken them that young before until about six months ago.

“Georgina is their coach. She is a black belt, but because she is so young and she has come such a long way we have given her this group and she has done really well.”

At its final meeting before Christmas the club also gave out special awards to four of its students.

Jess won an award for becoming the club’s youngest member to grade.

Georgina was named the most improved female member of the club this year, while the award for most improved male of the year went to Jamie Cullerton.

Helen Collier picked up a special award for her efforts in gaining a grant from Haverhill Round Table which enabled the club to purchase two crash mats.

Haverhill Wado Freestyle Karate Club meets on Monday and Wednesday, from 7pm to 9pm at the Chalkstone Community Centre in Strasbourg Square.

Anyone interested in joining the club can either pop along or call Greg Malyon on 07811878328 or e-mail hwfk@sky.com.
