Are you Suffolk’s finest amateur baker?

The search is on to find Suffolk’s best amateur baker and a Signature Bake our county can be proud of in a contest organised by local business Genesis PR in aid of charity St Elizabeth Hospice.

The first fun and charitable bake-off will take place at St Elizabeth Hospice at Foxhall Road in Ipswich on Saturday, January 19 (midday to 2pm) and further events are being planned to take place in Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft, before the winners are invited to a grand live final which will take place in March.

The team at Suffolk PR agency Genesis PR are giving their time freely to organise the contest and entry fees of £5 (minimum donation) per baker will go directly to St Elizabeth Hospice via the hospice’s online fund-raising site (

Further money will be raised through a charitable raffle and the Genesis PR team are currently seeking prize donations from local businesses.

Amateur bakers will be invited to bring their Suffolk Signature Bakes along for judging by a panel of experts including local chef Emma Crowhurst, BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Lesley Dolphin and editor of Suffolk magazine, Jayne Lindill.

Also joining the panel is local restaurant owner Regis Crepy (Mariners, The Great House) Chris Lee (head chef at the award winning Bildeston Crown), and qualified cookery judge Jane Sago from the Suffolk East Federation of Women’s Institutes.

There will be sweet and savoury categories and prizes for both grown-up bakers and young bakers under 16.

The only criteria are that all bakers must show a Suffolk theme either by using local ingredients or in their presentation.

Penny Arbuthnot, director, Genesis PR, says: “The idea for The Great Suffolk Bake Off is a response to the terrific BBC series and who knows, we may even be able to identify an iconic Suffolk bake and the talent which will help put Suffolk further on the map for great local food.”

She continued: “The team is looking forward to having lots of fun whilst raising much needed funds for the outstanding work of St Elizabeth Hospice.”

For all the foodies of Suffolk who would like to watch the judging spectacle and be in with a chance of tasting some of the entries afterwards they will be welcome to join in the fun at the Great Suffolk Bake Off.

Sarah Archer, of St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “Our Accumulator Challenge is a fantastic way for local businesses to get involved and support the Hospice in a variety of creative and exciting ways.

“We are delighted to have Genesis PR as one of the many companies on board and are really looking forward to Suffolk’s Signature Bake.

“Every penny raised will help us to continue to provide hospice care for local people free of charge.”

The Great Suffolk Bake off is a fundraising event being organised by Genesis PR in aid of their efforts towards the St Elizabeth Hospice Accumulator Challenge.

The team were given £50 in October 2012 and have six months to turn this into as much money as possible for St Elizabeth Hospice before April 2013.
