Haverhill girl, six, has a book published
A six-year-old girl from Haverhill has had a book about the planets in our solar system published.
Isla Grace Green, of Abbotts Road, has had ‘We Are the Planets’ published by Shook Bop, an online book shop launched in February by Haverhill author Carl Mynott.
Place Farm Primary Academy pupil Isla was already interested in the solar system, explained her mum Rebecca Durrant, but that fascination has grown during the coronavirus lockdown into her coming up with the idea for the book.
Rebecca said: “Isla wrote a book and drew her own pictures and we laminated it and turned it into a book for her and we had a video of her reading the book to family members.
“My mum showed it to Carl (they are cousins) just to show him how well she had done and he was really interested in the book and thought he could sell some for her.
“She has sold 50 so far and that’s not bad for a six-year-old.”
The book features a different planet on each page, complete with drawings by Isla of each planet accompanied by a few interesting facts.
It essentially takes the reader on a journey through the solar system with each planet being given its own personality.
Neptune, for example, is the planet that is farthest from the Sun and therefore extremely cold, so it is wearing a woolly hat.
Carl, who launched Shook Bop in order to help independent authors get published, was immediately impressed when he saw Isla reading on video.
He said: “It was brilliant. She read this book out and I thought ‘crikey this is absolutely perfect for children to learn about the Solar System’.
“It was just such a good book. I think if anyone had come to me with the book I would have done something with it because it’s perfectly pitched. It’s got a really good, constant rhythm.”
Rebecca added: “We have tried to say to Isla, it’s a really big achievement but she can’t qualify it at her age. It’s like ‘I’ve got a book, it’s quite exciting’.”
