Donation is music to care homes residents’ ears
Residents at Woodfield Court and Chilton Court Care Homes have been singing their hearts out thanks to a generous donation by Stowmarket Lions.
The homes have used the donation to buy a Silver Song Music Box. The music box system connects to a television, enabling the activity co-ordinator, Sandra Goswell, to lead community singing sessions.
The concept evolved from the 19th century pianola but with modern technology replacing the paper cylinders on which the music is stored.
Sandra said: “Having the Silver Song Music Box at our two homes has opened up the world of music to our residents.
“Music touches a deeper part of a person that conversation can rarely reach, especially for those with some form of dementia.
“They may not be able to form a cohesive sentence together with the words in the right order, but they can sing every word of a song they remember from long ago, maybe from a time when life was easier or happier for them.
“Music can be a way in to a locked or confused mind and takes people to a place where things may make sense again, even if just for a while.
“Having this equipment to use within our two homes has enabled the care staff to enter this world of music alongside the resident, and consequently we have more activities throughout the week on a regular basis.”
