A plan for a new roundabout in Wratting Road, Haverhill, which would provide access to the Station Yard site, was attacked by a borough councillor who said it would cause chaos at the nearby Cangle Junction.

At a meeting of St Edmundsbury’s planning committee, Mike Richards argued that there should be two roundabouts giving access to Station Yard.

The meeting approved plans for a car park and supermarket on the site and on the adjoining depot site.

A dream holiday cruising in the Caribbean had just begun for a Haverhill couple who had never been on a honeymoon after their wartime wedding.

Ron and Lil Barber, of Downs Crescent, celebrated their golden wedding aboard a P&O liner on a Caribbean cruise that culminated in a short stay in Acapulco in Mexico.

“It is the kind of holiday we have dreamed about,” said Lil. “When we were married in 1940, Ron was in khaki and had to report back to his army unit the next day. We feel we are lucky to still be together.”
