Haverhill Running Club's junior section goes from strength to strength

The chair of Haverhill Running Club has expressed her pride at the progress made by its junior section after it celebrated its first anniversary since being formed.

The juniors celebrated being a year old on May 1 and to mark that each junior member was presented with a hoodie bearing the club logo and that of their sponsor, JPK Carpentry and Construction.

Karen Martin, chair of Haverhill Running Club, praised not just the young runners, but also the contribution made to the junior section by coach Sil Clay and her fellow coaches.

Karen said: “I’m incredibly proud of what Sil and her team have achieved in just a year.

“We have 20 active junior members and they are all flying at the moment and recent results show the progress and effort they have put in.

“To have grown from an initial in take of just half a dozen to 20, with a further two waiting to start, is just incredible.

“The regular attendance and commitment to representation of the club is just brilliant and the parents of the juniors need to be recognised for all that they do to make sure their children turn up for training and events.

“The adult members need to start watching their backs as there is some real talent coming through which is great to see, after all they are the future members of the adult section and who knows one of them may even be the future chair person, club captain or coach”.

The juniors had a formal awards event on June 29.

The award winners and their respective categories were as follows:

n Most improved newcomer; Sophie Russel

n Overall performance; Ben Phillips.

n Cross country performance; Harry Holroyd

n Motts Field time trial; Charlotte Hulyer and Benji Darken

n Members member; Sorren Spall

n Coach’s choice; Sorren Spall and Juliet Bigley

n Most improved; George Noakes

n Recognition for sprint efforts; Jed Randall

Coach Sil Clay expressed the club's gratitude to Sam and Andreea Clark of Route 66 American Diner in Haverhill for their help in the junior section's awards event.

Sil said: "They kindly opened their restaurant on Sunday for our exclusive use, providing fantastic food and a wonderful venue.

"A great example of a local business supporting a local club."
