A GP who practiced at a Haverhill surgery has been barred from treating any female patient in private without the presence of another person.

Dr Giles Stevens had been a partner at the Christmas Maltings and Clements Practice from September 2012 until leaving it last September 1. Although he has left the practice Dr Stevens, who has also recently left the role he had on the executive committee of the West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), his registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) has had restrictions placed on it while allegations about his conduct are investigated.

After appearing at an Interim Orders Panel held by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) on October 15, a series of conditions were placed on him until January 2017.

One of those conditions says: “Except in life-threatening emergencies, he must not carry out consultations with female patients without a chaperone present.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Dr Stevens requires a chaperone for any adult female patient aged 16 years or over or for any patient under the age of 16 years accompanied by an adult female.

“He must keep a log detailing every case where he has carried out a consultation with such a patient, which must be signed by the chaperone.

“He must keep a log detailing every case where he has carried out a consultation with such a patient in a life-threatening emergency, without a chaperone present.”

Dr Stevens is duty bound to give a copy of those logs to the Interim Orders Panel at his next review hearing.

Neither the Christmas Maltings and Clements Practice, the GMC or the West Suffolk CCG were able to comment on the nature of the allegations made against Dr Stevens.

However, a statement from the Christmas Maltings and Clements Practice said. “Dr Stevens is no longer a doctor at this Practice and It would be inappropriate of us to make any comment on the ongoing GMC process.

“We have successfully recruited a doctor to replace Dr Stevens.”
