Linton Heights Junior School sets its sights on raising £20,000 to save its swimming pool

A village school’s 44-year-old swimming pool is in such a poor state that it has been closed down and cannot reopen until about £20,000 worth of refurbishments have been completed.

With that in mind, a fund-raising appeal - which includes a Just Giving page - has been launched to get the necessary repairs done to the pool at Linton Heights Junior School.

It is hoped to have this all done by next June

The list of required refurbishments and repairs includes a new heating system, pool cover, cover reel system, pool liner and pool filtration system.

The school’s headteacher, James Puxley, said: “We are looking at between £18,000 to £20,000 by the time you have added in little details. It’s a full refurbishment.

“What’s been happening so far every year since we got here, we’ve been patching it up. It’s losing water faster than we can put it in.

“The heating and filtration system isn’t working. It’s down on its knees.

“It’s used by our school and the (Linton) infant school and the community groups.

“We are very interested in opening it up more to the community, especially over the summer months.”

Mr Puxley also pointed out that the closure of the pool, which would have to be shut for good unless the repairs are done, would leave its pupils unable to have any swimming lessons.

The cost and time required to get children to pools in either Haverhill or Saffron Walden are too prohibitive, he added.

It is also a national curriculum requirement for schoolchildren to be able to confidently swim 25m by the age of 11.

A fund-raising page is now open at www.justgiving.com.
