A Haverhill church is set to welcome its new minister, with the post having been vacant since 2013.

The United Reformed Church, known as the Old Independent Church, in Hamlet Road, will hold a special service for the Rev Cecil White, who is to become the church’s new minister.

The service will be held in the church on Saturday, April 25 at 2.30pm.

Mr White will take over ministerial duties at the church after the previous incumbent, the Rev Karen Knight, left in November 2013.

Ms Knight had held the post for 15 years and had been the church’s longest serving minister. She left to become a Carmelite nun.

Mayor Roger André will be attending the special service on Saturday.

“It’s very welcome and it brings some stability to the church,” he said. “The future of the church is in the young people that come to visit with their families. All our churches have this issue.

“We need that stability for them. The church can provide a safe environment for children.

“They are going to be developing the church buildings soon as well.

“Having the new minister starting will give a boost to the church and help it get ready for the future.”
