Haverhill Echo 25 years ago

Echo, November 29, 1990

Two members of staff at the sub post office on Haverhill’s Clements estate refused to hand over any money when confronted by two armed men in hold-up attempt.

The masked men fled empty-handed after telling sub-postmistress Joyce Weekes to fill up a bag with money and ordering shop assistant Catherine Williams to the floor.

One of the men was carrying a handgun, although it was not known if it was real, and the other a fold up knife.

Haverhill and District Volunteer Centre’s began its first annual general meeting on Tuesday with an appeal for more cash.

The centre had become widely known and well used but cash was a problem.

At the meeting it was revealed that since it opened in April members had spent a great deal of time trying to find funds to keep it afloat.

Much of the fund-raising work centres on applying for grants.

Chairman Roger Jackson said it had been a difficult time but he hoped it would improve next year.
