Haverhill Echo ten years ago

Crashes spark action

The perils of driving into or out of Haverhill were highlighted by serious accidents on all three of the major roads serving the town.

Four crashes in six days on the A1307 at Horseheath, the A143 at Wickhambrook and the A1017 at Ridgewell and at Great Yeldham, the last of these fatal, galvanised parish councils to renew their battles for speed limits and road safety improvements.

A family was reunited after 22 years apart on different sides of the world.

Haverhill man Bob Bramhald had not seen his two sisters Greta Anderson and Olga Speicher since their father Fred’s funeral in 1983.

And their last meeting before that was at the funeral of their mother Thilis in 1975.

Olga had moved to America in 1954, Greta moved to Australia in 1963 while Bob had stayed in England, moving from their home town of Newmarket to Haverhill.

Circumstances prevented them getting together- although letters and phone calls were exchanged - until Greta’s son bought two tickets for her to fly to England.
