Haverhill Echo ten years ago

Echo, December 22.2005

A STAR IN THE EAST

British motorists voted the Spirit of Free Enterprise at the gateway to Haverhill as the third best in the country.

A new survey by Saga Motor Insurance saw the traffic light tree at Canary Wharf in London voted top, closely followed by Birmingham’s Spitfire roundabout, and Haverhill’s ‘light and laser spectacle’ third.

The sculpture was the brainchild of business group Haverhill Enterprise 2000, to try and raise the profile of the town nationally, and it cost around £100,000.

ONE MAN’S WAR AGAINST REALITY

A tribunal heard that former Haverhill town councillor Mabon Dane waged a campaign against town clerk, Gordon Mussett, accusing him of fraud, bombarding him with emails and banning him from visiting other councillors’ homes.

Officials from the Adjudication Panel for England (APE) - a Government body that monitors councillor behaviour - heard evidence from the Standards Board for England claiming that the ex-councillor failed to treat Mr Mussett with respect and brought the town council into disrepute.
