An upper school in Haverhill has announced the appointment of a new principal.

Kath Just will be taking over from Andy Prestoe as principal of Samuel Ward Academy, joining on a phased basis in the summer term.

Ms Just, 53, said: “I am very much looking forward to getting to meet the students, staff and everyone in and connected to the school community.”

In a varied educational career, Ms Just has worked as a secondary school teacher on the Isle of Man, taught in Singapore and was also part of an educational visit to the Ukraine supporting curriculum development across the London Borough of Richmond.

Currently a deputy headteacher at Chiswick School in London, Ms Just is an English graduate with a masters in school leadership.

She has also walked the length of Hadrian’s Wall to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, trekked across the Inca Trail in Peru, volunteered on a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa and travelled around China, Uganda, Australia and New Zealand.

Howard Lay, chief executive of the trust, said: “I am pleased that we have been able to make such a strong appointment. Kath will forge strong relationships with pupils, parents and staff and ensure that the outstanding reputation of Samuel Ward will continue.

“She will also join an effective group of seven other headteachers within the trust who are strong at supporting and challenging each other.”

Mr Prestoe will lead the development of the new Sybil Andrews Academy in Bury St Edmunds, which will become the eighth school under the Samuel Ward Academy Trust banner when it opens in September.
