Haverhill Silver Band achieves an historic promotion, while Haverhill Youth and Community Band also enjoy contest success

After a history dating back more than 150 years, Haverhill Silver Band has been placed in the Championship Section Contest (the top division) for the first time, confirming its position as the highest ranking brass band in East Anglia.

In a recent contest held in Leicester the band was placed in third, beaten only by two bands which are both ranked inside the top 60 in the world.

Speaking on behalf of the band, Di Pannell, said: “Haverhill chose to play a piece considered to be one of the most difficult in the contest repertoire and produced a technically competent and musical performance which was highly commended by the adjudicator.”

Players in the Haverhill Youth and Community Band have also been taking to the contest stage.

Three of the band’s young players, Archie Pannell, Reggie Locket and James Howe entered the Cottenham Youth Solo Festival, with Archie winning a shield for the most promising player.

Both bands are busy preparing for a packed Christmas programme.

They will be performing ‘A Family Christmas Concert’ at Haverhill Arts Centre on Sunday, December 9 at 4pm.

This promises to be a fun event and have something for every member of the family.
